TERMS AND COMMANDS
- Definition of Tae Kwon Do- The art (or way of) striking with the hand and feet. TAE KWON DO is a blend of Korean foot fighting (taek kyon) and Japanese Karate
- Origin of Tae Kwon Do- Korea, about 1,500 years ago. Modern Tae Kwon Do was created by General Choi during the 20th century in S. Korea.
- INTERNATIONAL TAE KWON DO FEDERATION (ITF)- Founded in 1966
- Korean Flag - T'aegukki. Name comes from the taeguk circle in the center of the flag.
School - Kwan
- Workout Area, training hall, place where "the Way is taught"-DoJang
- Uniform-Do Bok or Do Buk
- Belt - Ti (dee)
- Forms- also called HYUNGS or TULS are patterns of TKD techniques that imitate attacking and defending. There are 24 HYUNGS one for each hour of the day.
- DAN - Black Belt rank (degree). There are 9 Dans in Tae Kwon Do. 9th Grandmaster is highest rank.
- Instructor/Teacher-Sa Bum Nim
- Director of a School - Kwang Jung Nim (Mr. Woodside & Mr. Mello)
- NIM - a term of respect similar to "Sir" or "Honorable"
- Attention - Char ryutt
- Bow - Kyung Rae (after the command Char ryutt)
- Ready Stance - Joon Bi
- Begin a Technique - Si Jak
- To Continue a Technique - Listen for Instructors Ki Hap
- KI HAP - Yell or shout of self encouragement. Done loudly and with confidence.
- Turn to the Back During a Series of Techniques - Ki Dow
- Return to Joon Bi Stance - Bo Ra
- Bow - Sho or Shio
- Student Response to a Bow Command - Pilsum - (means I did my best)
